Terms of service

These terms cover the ExternUp app, the web portal at app.externup.com, this website, and the sign-off and evaluation links ExternUp sends to preceptors. ExternUp is developed and operated by Dixie Technical College in St. George, Utah ("ExternUp", "we"). By signing in, opening a sign-off link, or otherwise using ExternUp you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you do not agree, do not use ExternUp and tell your school.

Your school and you

ExternUp is provided to you by your school, which may be Dixie Technical College or another participating college ("your school"). Your school issues your account, decides what it records about your externship, and controls that information. Your school's program rules, student handbook and enrollment agreement continue to apply. Where they say more than these terms, they govern your relationship with your school; these terms govern your use of ExternUp.

Accounts

• Accounts are created by your school. There is no public sign-up.
• Keep your password private. Never let anyone else clock in, request a sign-off, or complete an evaluation as you, and never use anyone else's account.
• Your school may suspend or remove your access at any time, for example when your externship ends. We may lock an account to protect the service or its records.
• If you are under 18, your school is responsible for obtaining your parent's or guardian's consent for your participation in the program, including your use of ExternUp.

Honest records

Everything ExternUp records about a student — hours, locations, sign-offs, badge photos and evaluations — forms part of your school's education records. You agree not to:

• clock in when you are not at the assigned site, or misrepresent your location by any means, including mock-location apps and modified devices;
• request a sign-off from anyone other than the preceptor who supervised the shift, or forward a sign-off link to anyone;
• submit, alter, or ask someone else to submit a false verification, badge photo, evaluation or time record;
• look at or attempt to reach records that are not yours, or interfere with the service, its security, or other users.

Suspected falsification is reported to your school and handled under its academic-integrity and conduct policies. Your school's staff review and approve hours; ExternUp's software does not decide them, and an entry in ExternUp is not a grade, a credential or a promise of graduation.

Location and site monitoring

For students, the app records your device's location when you clock in and out and, while you are clocked in, one location fix if you leave the site's boundary and one when you return. The privacy policy explains exactly what is stored and for how long. Two things to understand:

• It is not a safety or emergency service. Nobody watches it in real time, notifications can be delayed or lost, and it must never be relied on to summon help. In an emergency call 911 and follow the site's procedures.
• Missed records are your responsibility to report. If a clock-in fails — a dead battery, no signal, a denied permission — tell your instructor promptly. Your school can review and correct records; ExternUp cannot recreate hours that were never recorded.

Preceptors

If you supervise students, you may use ExternUp through a school-issued login or through single-use links sent by text or email. By opening a link you agree to these terms for that use. You agree to verify only shifts you actually supervised, to answer truthfully whether the student was present, and, where the program requires it, to take a live photo of your own work badge, which the school keeps as evidence of who verified the shift. Links are personal and single-use; do not forward them.

Text messages

ExternUp sends text messages only to run a school's externship program: a sign-off or evaluation link to a preceptor when a student or the school requests one, and occasionally an account message to a student or staff member. There are no marketing messages. Message frequency depends on how many shifts you supervise. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP to any message to stop receiving texts from ExternUp (the student's school will then need to reach you another way) and HELP for help, or email externup@dixietech.edu. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages. Mobile numbers are never sold or shared with third parties for marketing.

Externship sites, clinical experience and safety

ExternUp is a record-keeping tool. It does not place, supervise or insure students, and it does not make externship sites safe. Your school's program rules and the site's own policies govern your conduct and safety while you are there, and any injury or incident must be reported through your program's procedure. To the fullest extent permitted by law, ExternUp and Dixie Technical College are not liable for any injury, illness, exposure, property loss or other harm that occurs at an externship or clinical site, or while travelling to or from one. Nothing in ExternUp — an approved shift, a verified sign-off, a presence notification — confirms that a site is safe or that you are cleared to perform a procedure.

If you are a Dixie Technical College student, you agreed to the following when you applied to your program, and it continues to apply:

Clinical Experiences. This program contains a clinical experience segment in which students will observe and perform specific healthcare procedures that may include being in contact with patients at the clinical site. The clinical experience is necessary to provide proper training and experience for the student's future occupation.

Students are also required to conduct a drug and criminal background check and receive immunizations in order to participate in these clinical experiences. The students will need to participate in the clinical experience to be eligible to graduate and receive their certificate from Dixie Technical College.

Students who wish to not participate in clinicals and their associated drug and background checks and immunizations may withdraw by submitting a request in accordance with the College's Withdrawal Policy. Students must consent to participate in the clinical experience as well as the drug and background check and immunizations for them to be admitted to the program. If a student is under the age of 18, the student's parent or guardian must consent.

Students must pay for the cost of supervision if Dixie Tech's clinical site will not accept the student.

If you attend another participating school, the equivalent statement in your school's enrollment agreement or program handbook applies.

Privacy

What ExternUp collects, who can see it and how long it is kept is described in the privacy policy, which is part of these terms.

Our software, your content

We grant you a personal, non-transferable licence to use the ExternUp app and portal for your school's externship program. The software, the ExternUp name and mark, and this website belong to Dixie Technical College. You keep your rights in what you submit — photos, evaluation answers, messages — and give your school and us permission to store and process it to run the program. If you installed the app from the App Store or Google Play, that store's terms also apply. Apple and Google are not parties to these terms, are not responsible for the app or for supporting it, and have no obligation to you regarding it; support comes from your school and from us.

Availability and disclaimers

ExternUp is provided "as is" and "as available". We work to keep it running and accurate, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted service, that every text or email is delivered, that GPS readings are precise, or that records are free of error. Check your hours regularly and tell your school's staff about anything that looks wrong. ExternUp does not give medical, legal or professional advice.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, ExternUp and Dixie Technical College, and their officers, employees and agents, are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost hours, lost opportunities, or delayed completion of a program, arising from your use of or inability to use ExternUp, including from an outage, a failed clock-in, a missed notification or a message that was not delivered. Dixie Technical College is a public institution of the State of Utah; claims against it are subject to the Governmental Immunity Act of Utah, including its notice-of-claim requirements. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Ending your access

Your school may deactivate your login when your externship or enrolment ends. Your records stay with your school under its retention rules (see the privacy policy); deactivation does not delete them. We may suspend or end your access if you break these terms. You may stop using ExternUp at any time; tell your school if you do, since your program may require it.

Changes

We may update these terms and the privacy policy. The date at the top changes when we do. For a material change you will be asked to review and accept again the next time you sign in, and participating schools are told in advance what changed and why. Continuing to use ExternUp after a change means you accept it.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Utah and applicable federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes are heard in the state or federal courts located in Utah, unless the law requires otherwise.
